Edith Werkendam (1896-1952) was the author of four novels and a few short stories. In spite of some success in the 1920s, her work soon fell into oblivion. Since the 2000s, it has been rediscovered, notably as a research object in the field of women’s and queer studies. Contemporary critics reserved a mixed judgment to her work, in which she explored the spectrum of female sexuality. This article analyses the reception of two works, in which female homosexuality is explicitly discussed: the collection of short stories Het purperen levenslied (1922) and the novel De goddelijke zonde (1928).
